BC Christian Academy Builds Community Through Recycling

This year, BC Christian Academy (BCCA) stepped up their annual bottle drive from a simple fundraiser to a school-wide mission that brought together staff, students, families and neighbours in a display of teamwork and community spirit.

Held across three campuses in Port Coquitlam, the event was carefully planned with volunteers, collection stations, and student teams. Students of all ages took part, elementary students carried and sorted bottles, middle school students organized donations, and high school students managed heavy lifting and helped younger participants. Grade 9 students even went door-to-door in the Fernwood neighbourhood, respectfully asking for contributions and proudly explaining their project.

Parents signed up through the school’s volunteer portal, teachers adjusted schedules, and neighbours joined in by leaving bottles outside.

“I’ve seen lots of fundraisers, but this one touched my heart. Seeing your students out here working with joy is something special.” - Community Member

In just two days, the school collected 7,977 containers, raising $1,026 to support programs and activities. Students also gained valuable lessons in responsibility, teamwork and leadership while the event strengthened bonds across the school and with the wider community.

To build on the momentum, BCCA also sent home pre-labelled Return-It bags on Earth Day, encouraging families to continue recycling. For the school, the initiative was a reminder that small, united efforts can create lasting impact.

"While the final numbers reflected a successful collection, the true impact of this initiative went far beyond dollars and bottles. It instilled the values of hard work, teamwork, and servant leadership in our students. It strengthened connections across our campuses and deepened our ties with the broader community. And it reminded every participant—student, parent, and staff alike—that when we come together with purpose and unity, remarkable things can happen.” - Ana Enduma, Community Engagement Coordinator, BC Christian Academy
