Week 4: May 22 - May 28

Haney Bottle Depot

They call it "Rainy Haney" grumbled Super Sidekick as they flew overhead.  "Fear not!" exclaimed Return-It Man "The Recycling force is strong with this Depot.”  The weather did not disappoint. In fact, not only was the weather sunny, it was the depot owner's birthday as well. To make the day special, her daughter and friends came down to surprise her by handing out hotdogs and running activities for the kids. Once the sun was high enough, Return-It Man turned up the tunes and danced for the passing cars, families and even neighbourhood pets. Later on, Anita, the birthday girl got behind the grill and showed her daughter how to cook a mean hot dog.

Maple Ridge Bottle Depot

It was all about elbow grease on this bright afternoon. In fact, Return-It Man was just saying to handler before he arrived "I really do miss a good honest day of Recycling". Much to his surprise, the folks at the Maple Ridge Bottle Depot put him straight to work; loading the vans, helping folks from their cars, and even helping the local charities. Return-It Man met groups raising money for families in Africa, softball players saving up for a trip to Idaho, and even a group of kids trying to collect enough money to buy their mom a new camera. Return-It Man was so impressed with Maple Ridge's efforts he decided to make it the Honorary Return-It-for-Others capital of the celebration tour. Well done, Maple Ridge!

Qualicum Bottle & Recycling

Nestled on Fourth Street, Qualicum Bottle & Recycling lay dormant. At 9:00 AM the only sounds were the birds chattering and occasional truck passing by. As soon as the depot doors burst open and the friendly staff started setting up shop, people were showing up in droves. It wasn't long before Return-It Man and his Super Sidekick had the place looking like a party. After everything was in order, our two heroes made off for the beach. Return-It Man flexed his beach body while Super Sidekick tossed the ol' Frisbee with a couple of families. Now, being on the beach makes Return-It Man very hungry, and it wasn't long before his stomach was growling. Thankfully our heroes had heard a passing word about a Farmers Market. Before you could say "RECYCLE", Return-It Man was skipping through the market sampling the wares and spreading the recycling cheer. So fun was his morning that he almost forgot about the draw. Luckily for everyone, Super Sidekick kept him on schedule. “Pheuf”, exclaimed Return-It Man “I almost let the tasty Qualicum goodies distract me from my recycling duties!”

Parksville Bottle & Recycling

Well, this wasn't the first time Return-It Man has visited Parksville Bottle & Recycling, but it was the first time he had seen it after the renovations. With a new storage facility in the back and a brand new Five Star Depot in the front, the Parksville location is certainly one of the sleekest locations on the Island. After Return-It Man had finished admiring the snazzy depot, and setting up his balloon tent, he grabbed a hotdog and went down to the beach. The tide was out and the fun was in; kids flying kites, families with BBQs, and all sorts of interesting characters. Return-It Man paraded up and down the seawall, letting everyone know just how important recycling is to the community. Back at the depot, things were getting fired up. Neil was making lunch for everyone and blasting tunes on The Return-It Music Box. People from all over had come over for the celebration. One family took a barge over from Lasquitti Island and their truck was filled with over $300 dollars of returns. Return-It Man climbed inside the 2 tonne truck, “Now this is Recycling!”

Cowichan Valley Bottle Depot

“Another quiet Sunday”, thought Return-It Man as he flew over the island towards Duncan. He was certainly mistaken... It was the most amazing sight: Bowling, face painting, BBQ, pie throwing and even a live BAND!! The depot had been completely transformed into the biggest depot festival in history. Return-It Man bounced from event to event in a giddy daze. The staff were dressed up like butlers and the live band wrote Return-It Man a theme song, to which he performed a few separate dance routines. A little rusty at first, but after a few go’s, he was jiving with staff and patrons alike. Return-It Man took a little breather and then plunged right into bowling; not his best sport he later redeemed himself with can tossing (which he performed BLIND)! Between the sports, promoting the Big Brother Charity, and keeping the returns flowing, Return-It Man was exhausted. By the time the draw was finished he thought “Wow, I couldn't possibly lift another finger.” That was until he overheard someone shout “Pie Toss!”.  Return-It Man had the honors of being the first and only one to hit Louis (Depot Owner) square in the face with a scrumptious caramel, whipped cream pie.
