It is important for both consumers and industry to be aware of which products are, and are not, part of the Return-It Electronics program. (Scroll down on this page for more product type information)
About the Environmental Handling Fee (EHF)
The EHF is not a tax. Fees collected fund the electronics recycling program.
As of February 1, 2011, the Environmental Handling Fee (EHF) that is levied on the sale of new products in the designated categories has been adjusted. One-hundred percent (100%) of the program revenue will be used for the administration, collection, transportation, and responsible recycling of end-of-life electronics.
Products not regulated within the program will not have a fee levied and, consequently, will not be accepted at Return-It Electronics Collection Sites.
The following items can be recycled free of charge at any Encorp Return-It Electronics Collection Site. The associated Environmental Handling Fees (EHF) are charged at the time of purchase.
British Columbia’s Recycling Regulation
The BC Recycling Regulation requires “producers” (often first importers to the province including manufacturers, distributors and retailers) of an expanded list of designated electronics products to have an approved product stewardship program in place by July 1, 2012. The program must include a province-wide collection system where consumers can drop off end of life products without charge, as well as a system for recycling the collected products. Electronics Products Recycling Association – Program Expansion
The EPRA-BC program expanded as of July 1, 2012 to cover additional products, including;
- I.T. & Telecom Equipment
- Electronic Musical Instruments
- Medical Monitoring & Treatment Devices
- Video Gaming Systems & Accessories

- Multiple products combined in a single Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) package with a unique SKU are subject to one EHF
- Electronic medical equipment for monitoring or treatment is acceptable with the exception of devices that have been implanted or exposed to infectious bodily fluids. Return-It Collection Sites are not obligated to accept any equipment they feel is unsafe to handle.
